The Kinplex is Medicine Hat's only twin arena facility making it the perfect location for tournaments, competitions and other special events. Each arena includes a 185 x 85 ft. NHL-size ice surface, washrooms and change rooms. Kinplex I (Kin I) has bleacher seating capacity for 1,000 spectators and Kinplex II (Kin II) has capacity for 250. The facility also has a rentable 120-person meeting room with a large kitchen attached.
A range of innovative and energy-efficient mechanical refrigeration system upgrades were carried out at Kinplex, including the replacement of the existing ammonia reciprocating compressors with two independent screw compressor packages for each arena. The compressor packages include microprocessor control panels, providing all the operating and safety controls for the refrigeration system. Each arena has a new flooded shell and tube type chiller utilizing brine cooling fluid circulated through the hockey rink in-slab piping cooling system. The pumps have variable frequency drive electric motors to provide optimum ice temperature while reducing electrical energy usage. Both arenas have a base mounted sub floor heating pump providing heated brine below the surface to prevent sub floor frost development and slab heaving. Heating for these systems comes from waste heat recovered from the refrigeration compressor hot gas discharge.
A new evaporative type condensing unit in each arena incorporates an axial fan system with variable frequency drive electric motors for accurate system control and energy efficiency. A new condensing water chemical treatment package is also included in the upgrades.
