northwest community College

smithers, BC

This LEED Gold targeted project offers the Northwest Community College a significant addition to the campus in terms of capacity and functionality. A renovation to the 7,760 sq.ft. existing building plus a new 20,000 sq.ft. addition, nearly tripled the College's previous capacity. The new campus has a large gathering area, expanded learning facilities and improved video conferencing and distance education capabilities. It includes additional classroom space, wet and dry science labs, a multi-purpose shop for trades programs, an expanded library, a computer lab and one flexible-use lab.

The building is flooded with natural light and heated with a ground source heat pump and condensing boilers for back-up. Other sustainable features include natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting and a solar water heating system. The new building can expect an approximate 50 percent reduction in energy use over a facility designed to the current Canadian Energy Code. This translates into a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.
