Vancouver Island University Gathering Place

nanaimo, BC

The Gathering Place at Vancouver Island University is dedicated to serve the First Nations students, elders and broader community and to accommodate post-secondary support and cultural functions. The design integrates sustainable mechanical strategies such as rain water harvesting from the green roof and storm water retention ponds to filter and reuse as grey water to flush toilets and feed irrigation.  The fire place used to preheat the Sacred Space brings a thermal chimney effect to assist in ventilation, doubling as a cultural symbol important in various Ceremonies.  Natural ventilation will be among other sustainable strategies used to reduce environmental impact.
