Project Description

Whistle Bend Continuing Care Facility

AME is providing mechanical consulting services for the design and construction phase of the new Whistle Bend Continuing Care Facility; a P3 contract with partners PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. and HDR|CEI Architecture for a new 150-bed residential care facility in the Whistle Bend neighbourhood of Whitehorse, YT.
The new $147 million facility will comprise two phases; the current Phase 1 and the proposed future Phase 2 (a mirror image of the first) will each provide 150 beds with a central Village Centre serving as the main entry and link between the two phases.
The design of Whistle Bend comprises seven separate residential houses over three levels, with each house consisting of private resident rooms supported by central services (kitchen, living, dining room). AME is the mechanical consultant for Phase 1 designed to house specialized spaces including a 12-bed palliative care unit and a 12-bed specialized mental health unit. In addition, the Village Centre, which forms part of the Phase 1 design, includes shops, services, day programs, multi-purpose rooms, a kitchen, laundry, storage, and staff and administrative spaces. Landscaped outdoor courtyard and garden areas will further enhance the welcoming environment for residents of this modern and highly energy-efficient facility.
The entire Whistle Bend facility is designed to accommodate residents with dementia and to support all levels of care. Its design comprises seven separate residential houses over three levels, with each house consisting of private resident rooms supported by central services (kitchen, living, dining room), with plenty of sunlight and access to landscaped outdoor courtyard and garden areas. By creating a welcoming, home-like environment the facility aims to promote excellence in resident-centered care and ease the transition between from independent living to “living with care”.
Phase 1 is anticipated to open in Spring 2018
