PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

The Hornby Island Community Arts Centre is a thoughtfully designed space dedicated to celebrating the local art community and providing a much-needed gathering place for residents and tourists alike. This project showcases innovative design solutions that blend seamlessly with the island’s character while addressing its unique challenges and remote construction.

The centre is among the few commercial buildings on the island and is designed to fit harmoniously with the community’s aesthetic. It utilizes sustainable strategies to operate efficiently within the island’s limited infrastructure. This includes rainwater  harvesting systems to address water conservation, and energy-efficient designs which minimize the load on limited power connections. Modern heat pump technology allows the building to remain fully air conditioned year-round, all while operating within the limited electrical capacity of the island.

The architectural centerpiece of the centre is a stunning two-storey atrium crowned that floods the interior with natural light, creating a welcoming space to showcase local art and host events.

Beyond gallery space, it includes a commercial kitchen for event catering, plus an educational and meeting room to broaden its usage and support community events. Set to complete in 2025, the Hornby Island Community Arts Centre will play a pivotal role in fostering creativity, connection, and celebration on the island for years to come.
