Surrey, one of Fraser Health’s fastest-growing municipalities with over 500,000 residents, is addressing increasing healthcare demands with the development of the Surrey Hospital and BC Cancer Centre. The new facility will feature 168 inpatient beds, five operating rooms, four procedure rooms, and an emergency department with 55 treatment spaces. The BC Cancer Centre will offer both chemotherapy and radiation therapy, equipped with specialized tools like linear accelerator (LINAC) and a cyclotron for radioactive isotope production.
The project is a landmark in sustainability. As the first fully electric hospital in BC and one of the first in Canada, it will operate without any gas-fired equipment, setting a new standard in healthcare. It will also be the first hospital in the province to achieve zero-carbon status, thanks to AME Group’s role as Owner’s Advisor for both mechanical systems and energy modelling. Our team provided critical guidance to help achieve LEED Gold certification, optimizing energy efficiency while reducing operational emissions. Key features include all-electric systems, adiabatic humidification, electrochromic glazing, and heat recovery chillers.
Designed for climate resilience through 2080, the hospital incorporates future-proof systems. Our team worked closely with project stakeholders to implement design solutions that will make this facility a model for sustainable healthcare, setting a new benchmark for hospitals in Canada and beyond.
