PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

The WinSport Day Lodge redevelopment is a full interior and exterior renewal of the existing facility, originally built in 1986 as the media centre for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games. The lodge later became the primary hub for year-round operations at Canada Olympic Park, supporting skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, training programs and administrative functions. After decades of continuous use, the building reached the end of its lifecycle, prompting a comprehensive upgrade to modernize the envelope, improve building performance and support long-term operational needs.

The project includes a complete renovation of all public and back-of-house areas along with an expansion of the existing cafeteria. Mechanical design strategies focus on high performance and long-term carbon reduction, including central air-to-water heat pumps that provide first-stage heating, dual core energy recovery systems and demand controlled ventilation. The redevelopment has achieved Zero Carbon Building – Design Certification under the CaGBC’s ZCB program.

A careful balance between envelope upgrades and mechanical system efficiency was required to meet the project’s Zero Carbon Thermal Energy Demand Intensity target. AME used our parametric tool, AME Compass, to evaluate multiple design pathways with cost input from the construction manager to establish an optimized approach.

The renewed Day Lodge supports WinSport’s broader campus operations by providing an accessible, modernized facility sized for year-round programming, visitor services and administrative functions.
