“UBC Properties Trust has worked with various AME team members and principals on our institutional developments over the last 10 years.
Some of the successful Vancouver campus projects include the new Student Union Building, Aquatic Centre, Exchange Residence as well as the Skeena and Nechako Commons residence projects in Kelowna. We find the AME teams very attentive to our needs and they provide an excellent level of service. Our projects are typically complicated with many unique challenges. AME works with the client and key stakeholders to resolve issues as they arise throughout construction and to ensure a high-quality project is delivered.”

Performance Modelling

We provide expertise related to building performance, including whole building energy modelling, thermal comfort analysis, embodied carbon analysis, and Passive House consulting.

New Building Energy Modelling

The AME Performance Team is one of the largest teams providing new building energy modelling services in Western Canada. We are involved in consulting for a diverse portfolio of residential, commercial, institutional, aquatic and recreation facilities. Our team participates in analysis typically to achieve code compliance, green rating system compliance, and incentive program goals. We work closely with the broader AME mechanical design team, exploring mechanical innovations.

AME Compass

To support analysis, AME has developed the Compass tool. The tool allows performance results of energy conservation measures to be compared, such as of the following: window performance, wall and roof assembly thermal performance, HVAC system options and efficiencies, lighting efficiencies, service water heating systems, and renewable energy resources. For each measure of interest, the design team identifies the range of possible scenarios that are to be studied, and each is analyzed. The results can then be reviewed together with respect to metrics such as energy cost, energy consumption, greenhouse gas use, and LEED performance. The Compass tool allows these results to be filtered interactively.

Commissioning

The commissioning process ensures that completed buildings are operating in accordance with the Clients’ goals of a functional and efficient building in new and existing buildings. The following services are provided:

  • Commissioning Authority
  • Commissioning Agent
  • Continuous Commissioning
  • Re-Commissioning
  • Retro-Commissioning
  • Pool Commissioning

Our Approach

AME has experience as the commissioning authority and agent on a variety of project types, including specialty buildings such as laboratories, aquatic facilities and hospitals.
Our team takes a hands-on approach to the commissioning process by being involved with design reviews, equipment start-ups, controls point to point checks, documentation review, troubleshooting. The team is on site regularly reviewing the systems as they are being installed, during the balancing phase and completing testing and verification of the building.

Existing Buildings

AME can provide Retro-Commissioning and Re-Commissioning of existing buildings to optimize the building system operations or even in improving energy efficiency overall.

Building Energy Services

At the Building Energy Service Team (BEST) our purpose is to reduce energy and carbon emissions in the existing built environment. We understand the evolving pressures of emissions penalties, carbon taxes, and Federal/Provincial carbon targets. BEST is here to help our Clients minimize the impact of these pressures while reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and operational costs.

Our extensive design, implementation, and commissioning experience with complex mechanical systems across multiple building sectors allows us to identify and successfully implement practical and highly effective solutions tailored to YOUR building!

Climate & Capital Renewal Roadmap

Leveraging replacement projects is often the most cost-effective approach to achieving substantial energy and carbon reduction in existing buildings. However, condition assessment and capital planning are often carried out independent of energy and carbon planning which can result in missed opportunities. At AME we work alongside our clients to develop a Climate & Capital Renewal Roadmap that integrates wholistic energy and carbon analysis into the condition assessment and capital planning exercise to best leverage operation and maintenance activities, along with end-of-life replacement projects to reduce both operating costs and carbon emissions. Coupled with available capital incentives, this approach succeeds in drastically improving the business case for energy and carbon reduction improvements.

Energy Services

Our extensive design and commissioning experience with complex mechanical systems across multiple building sectors sets us apart from other energy consultants. This experience allows us to identify and successfully implement practical, and high-impact solutions appropriate for each building. Our team also provides the following services for your existing facilities:

  • Energy and Water Assessments
  • Utility Incentive Studies (Fortis BC, Clean BC, and BC Hydro studies)
  • Full-service energy and carbon retrofits
  • Building Automation System (BAS) optimization and retrofit
